Alicja Krawczyńska, M.Sc., joined an interdisciplinary team that will carry out the project "Barriers to organizational change in Polish public museums."
The new definition of a museum, adopted in 2020 by the ICOM General Assembly, defines a museum as: "a permanent, non-profit institution serving the public, which is engaged in the study, collection, preservation, interpretation and presentation of tangible and intangible heritage." The Law on Public Museums defines the purpose of a "museum" institution as: "collection and permanent preservation of the goods of the natural and cultural heritage of mankind of a tangible and intangible nature, information on the values and contents of the collected collections, dissemination of the basic values of Polish and world history, science and culture, formation of cognitive and aesthetic sensitivity, and enabling the use of the collected collections."
In order to fulfill the objectives of the existence of museum institutions, in a way that meets the requirements of the contemporary audience of culture, by society, the way museums are managed requires urgent changes. Hence, the aim of the project is to critically analyze the museum system operating in Poland, to create a reliable catalog of organizational burdens and dysfunctions, and to identify alternative paths for the development of the organization.
